SKILL NOTES / 01
Before you step back.
Start close enough to repeat a balanced shot. Range comes later.
Notice where your feet land, how the ball leaves your hand, and whether you can hold your finish. If moving farther away changes the shot completely, move back in and work with your coach on the detail that is breaking down.
- Find your balance. Settle into a stance you can repeat without leaning to reach the rim.
- Keep a clear target. Pick a consistent point on the rim and stay with it through the release.
- Finish the rep. Hold your follow-through, notice the result, and reset deliberately.
A short stretch of attentive practice is more useful than rushing through shots without noticing what happened. Ask a coach to watch your form and give you one correction at a time.

Be the player you’d want beside you.
Your team notices what you do between touches.
Talk early.
Call a screen before your teammate reaches it. Say a teammate’s name when you have useful information. Be clear enough to help without adding noise.
Respond to the next play.
A missed shot or turnover has already happened. Get back into the possession, listen to the adjustment, and give the next effort your attention.
Make practice dependable.
Arrive ready, know the drill, and help a teammate who is learning it. Those ordinary habits make it easier for everyone to get useful work done.

After the game.
The ride home doesn’t need to be another film session.
Some players want to talk right away. Others need a little space. Start by asking whether they want to talk about the game, then let them set the pace.
- What felt better than last time?
- What did you notice while you were playing?
- Is there something you want to work on at the next practice?
Keep questions separate from instructions. If you have a concern about a team decision, talk with the coach at an agreed time instead of putting your player in the middle.
